Waste treatment in the Kingdom of Bahrain
In December 2008, the CNIM Group had announced the signing of an exclusivity contract for the treatment of all waste in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
The Kingdom of Bahrain has just launched the first phase of this waste treatment project, which includes the construction of a treatment centre for household and commercial waste with a capacity of 390,000 t/y offering energy recovery that will serve to provide the public electricity grid with 195,000 MWh/year.
The signing ceremony for the contracts governing this project was held on 24 June 2010 in the presence of the Minister for Municipalities and of the Deputy Finance Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain.
This project will be carried out in the form of a BOT* that includes the treatment unit’s construction and its operation for 25 years.
This project’s implementation is still subject to obtaining all of the necessary authorisations and permits, and to setting up the financing. After this signing, Nicolas Dmitrieff, Chairman of the Executive Board, stated: “The CNIM Group will look after the design, construction, commissioning and operation of this centre, that will convert a significant tonnage of waste as of 2014. The waste treatment technologies developed by our CNIM Group provide tried and tested solutions that are respectful of the environment. This long-term project aligns with the desire of the authorities of the Kingdom of Bahrain to ensure their community’s well-being, and it represents a strong commitment to their sustainable development approach”.
