CNIM-Clugston wins a contract to build the Earls Gate Waste-to-Energy plant in Grangemouth, Scotland

CNIM-Clugston wins a €170 million contract to build the Earls Gate Waste-to-Energy plant in Grangemouth, Scotland. CNIM is also awarded the contract to operate the plant for a period of 25 years. Clugston is in charge of the civil engineering of the building and CNIM is in charge of the design and the implementation of energy recovery processes.

This is the twelfth project carried out in the United Kingdom by the Franco-British joint venture composed of CNIM, an expert in waste-to-energy technologies and the civil engineering firm Clugston. The plant is intended for a consortium composed of Brockwell Energy, Green Investment Group (GIG) and Covanta Energy. The project is part of Scotland's ban on landfilling biodegradable municipal waste, which is expected to come into force in January 2021.

Work is scheduled to start in spring 2019 and the plant should be operational by the end of 2021. This will be CNIM's 21st plant in the United Kingdom and the first in Scotland.

Operational by 2021, the Earls Gate Energy Centre (EGEC) is expected to process approximately 216,000 tonnes of waste, or 20% of total household waste landfilled in Scotland, and to annually produce 79 GWh of green electricity and 81 GWh of heat in the form of steam.

EGEC will become a low-cost source of green energy for companies in the region, such as CalaChem, a chemical manufacturer and on-site energy service provider, which has entered into a long-term agreement for the supply of electricity and steam produced by the plant for distribution.
