Treatment and recovery of waste
CNIM, the engineering, procurement and construction contractor at Wheelabrator Technologies’ Parc Adfer Energy Recovery Facility, has successfully completed a best practice Five Star Occupational Health and Safety Audit conducted by the British Safety Council. The audit demonstrates the company’s commitment towards the continual improvement of its health and safety management systems and associated arrangements.
CNIM underwent a comprehensive, quantified and robust evaluation of its occupational health and safety policies, processes and practices at the Deeside site in North Wales. The audit process included documentation review, interviews with senior management, employees and other key stakeholders, together with sampling of operational activities.
The audit measured performance against key health and safety management best practice indicators and a detailed review of over sixty component elements.
David Parr, Policy and Technical Services Director at the British Safety Council, said:
“The award of a five-star grading following our occupational best practice Health and Safety Audit is an outstanding achievement and is reflective of a proactive organisation, which is committed to continual improvement in its health and safety arrangements and managing risks to workers’ health, safety and welfare. CNIM should be very proud of this achievement.“
Daniel Merlo, Head of HSE and CDM at CNIM, said: “CNIM does not compromise on health and safety at its construction sites and we are delighted that the measures we have in place, together with the outstanding work of our team at Wheelabrator Parc Adfer, have been recognised in this way. There is no greater acknowledgement than a five-star rating by the British Safety Council.”
Parc Adfer is being developed under the oversight of the client, Wheelabrator Technologies. Paul Green, the UK Managing Director of Wheelabrator said: “There is no greater acknowledgement than a five-star rating from the British Safety Council. The CNIM and Wheelabrator teams have worked closely together to achieve this significant accomplishment. We remain committed to delivering the highest safety performance at Wheelabrator Parc Adfer.”
Wheelabrator Parc Adfer is a new energy recovery facility for North Wales. It will divert waste from landfills by using post-recyclable waste as fuel to generate 19 MW (gross) of clean, sustainable electricity, equivalent to the needs of more than 30,000 homes.
About the Five Star Occupational Health and Safety AuditThe Five Star Audit is a comprehensive, contemporary and quantified process which benchmarks health and safety management performance against the latest best practice techniques.
The audit process is carried out through documentation review, management and other stakeholder interviews, as well as operational sampling.
Those organisations who achieve a five-star grading following the audit become eligible to enter the British Safety Council Sword of Honour Awards which recognise excellence in the management of health and safety.
The award scheme is an independently adjudicated process which requires five star achievers to build upon the audit findings and provide a written submission on their continual improvement planning.
